  Gibson Presentation Gavel

I have been a Freemason since 2013. My Mother Lodge traditionally presents a gift to the outgoing Master of the lodge (think president, and elected yearly) as a token of thanks for a job well done.  Our outgoing Master had stepped up and served two consecutive years in a row, which was no small accomplishment, and no small amount of work.  The lodge presented him a gift after his first year, but my fellow officers and I decided we wanted to do something else for him at the end of the 2016 year.

A gavel is one of several traditional Masonic gifts for a Past Master, and I wanted to make one that was a little bit special.  The gavel head is made from five pieces of figured Makore wood laminated together, and the handle and gavel facings are striped ebony.  I inlaid violin purfling around the top of the gavel head for added effect.  A few coats of tung oil finish off the gavel.

The engraving was done using a special computer operated laser engraver, and turned out absolutly magnificiently (thank you again, Karrie and Tommy!).  I am completely taken by how good a job the laser engraver did.  Tools like a band saw or drill press simply make a task that can be otherwise completed more efficient and easy, but the results produced by the engraver are far beyone what even the most skilled engraver could produce on a piece of wood, and more precise and crisp than any stamp or punch.

The gavel was very well recieved, and we were all proud to present a one of a kind gift for our one of a kind Brother.  Furthermore, as I built the gavel to be proper functional as well, our outgoing Master was able to use it to close the lodge he served on his last meeting as Master.
