Old Steampunk Projects

When I first fell into the Steampunk genre in 2008, I played around making a number of items within the spirit of the genre.  These largely included items I made specifically to sell, of which painted and modified nerf and airsoft guns were, I found, highly desirable, especially amongst folks who enjoyed LARP (live action role playing) and other costumed events.  The revenue from these sales helped to fund bigger and better projects, including the typewriter keyboard.

Unfortunatly, a lot of the pictures of these projects were lost or I did not think to save them, and I did not document the creation of any of them.

Of the few pictures I do have are the two projects shown here, both built to be enjoyed for a time, and then sold on.  The first is a pair of early electric headphones which I fit with the electronics from a set of modern headphones.  The result was a set of high functioning headphones that looked like they were right out of the 1920's.  The output did have a slight echo effect from the resonant metal cups, which added to the appeal without being too distracting.  These were not meant to be audiophile headphones, but something unique for casual use.

The second project is a "box fan" I created by ducting a small desktop electric fan inside of a wooden box.  I gave the project some extra complications, including wiring in a potentiometer to vary the fan speed, and a hinged lever-operated lid that could be used to increase or decrease air circulation.  Both of these were not strictly necessary, but I like added and interesting complications to objects that are carefully thought out and nicely carried out.  The fan worked very well and moved a lot of air for its size, primarily due to the custom duct shroud I made around the fan cage, which really focused the air stream (not unlike the shrouds of a lantern, which I was imitating in the overall design).

If I turn up more pictures worth sharing of other past projects in this vein, I will add them in.
