Uncommon                 Gavel

- The Simmons-

Material: Elm, Figured Maple, Ebony

This instrument is packed with symbolism.  From the whale-shaped head representing the historical whaling tradition of New Bedford, to the elm handle (state tree of Massachusetts) and intertwining ebony veeners symbolizing the equality movement and Frederick Douglass, this bespoke gavel serves as an encapsulation of local tradition and history.  The whale is carved from one piece of figured maple, and the handle is elm veneered in ebony, faceted to reveal the contrasting materials.
