My name is Spencer Hamann, and I am the maker behind The Uncommon Gavel.
I am a professional luthier by trade, and repairing, restoring, and adjusting fine string instruments has been my full time work since 2011. My formal education is in Musicology with a focus on Organology (the study of musical instruments) and I hold a BFA in Music History and Literature from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.

Uncommon Gavel
Masonically, I was raised in 2013 and have served as Master of Libertyville Lodge No. 492 and Spes Novum Lodge No. 1183, both out of Libertyville, Illinois. I have also served the Grand Lodge of Illinois as a Certified Lodge Instructor, District Education Officer of the First Northeastern District, and Grand Representative to Wisconsin.
The Uncommon Gavel has been an evolving venture, centered around creating bespoke instruments for discerning Craftsmen using traditional fine woodworking techniques and beautiful natural timbers. A Craftsman's tools are a reflection of the individual who wields them, and exceptional workmen deserve exceptional implements. These instruments are built to withstand the test of time and regular responsible use, and will surely become cherished heirlooms that can be enjoyed by generations. Quality is timeless.
My designs are inspired by study of classic tool forms, as well as original shapes and exploration of style and movement. I aim to hold in balance the design of the instrument itself and the materials employed in its creation, highlighting both the tool's form and the beauty of the material it is made from. I work regularly in exotic woods, and can source most species and figures which are not protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangererd Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Sustainability is as important now as it has ever been, if not moreso.

I typically work by commission. The process usually starts with a consultation, where the individual can discuss and describe their particular vision or requirements for a piece. This can include, for example, information on the individual or lodge who shall be the recipient, any motifs they would like to include, and colors/timbers requested. I can work to specifics, or be given reign to design and select timber myself to create a tasteful and beatiful instrument (or set of instruments for a lodge's dais officers, for example).
After a direction is agreed upon, I will quote an estimated price based on material and complexity. I will also establish a lead time for completion. I require a 50% deposit that will allow me to purchase materials and hold your spot in my books. The remainder of the balance is due within 14 days of notification of completion, unless an arangement has been made prior.
To begin the process or inquire to discuss your idea, please follow the "inquire" button above or on the home page.

I thank you very much for your interest in my work. It would be a pleasure to work with you to create an exceptional instrument for you to use during your tenure in office, for an individual to celebrate his achievements, an outgoing Master as a token of gratitude, a special occasion or anniversary of a lodge or body, or any other occasion where a bespoke instrument will be appreciated.
All the best on your journey and craft!
